British counter-terrorism police are investigating a major incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire after five men were arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
The arrests followed a call to emergency services at around 12:45 a.m. on September 27 reporting three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be travelling towards the air base. Armed officers responded and initially detained the five men under suspicion of offences related to the Explosives Act before they were additionally arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
85 Households Evacuated During Investigation
Police established a 400-metre cordon around the vehicles while Army bomb-disposal specialists examined the scene. As a precaution, residents from around 85 households in nearby Whelford were evacuated while the investigation continued.
The Metropolitan Police said the investigation remained in its early stages and that the five men were still in custody. Authorities have been working with Gloucestershire Police and other agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
