Kim Jong Un Calls for Rapid Expansion of North Korea’s Drone Technology, Oversees Weapons Demonstration

October 30, 2026

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a rapid expansion of the country’s unmanned aerial technology, describing advanced drone capabilities as a major priority for its military. His remarks came during an exhibition in North Korea on October 29, 2026, where he reviewed a range of unmanned aircraft and observed a military demonstration, according to state media.

The exhibition, titled “Unmanned Aeronautical Technology Development-2026”, showcased different types of strategic, operational and tactical drones. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the display highlighted recent developments and future plans for the country’s unmanned aviation programme.

In his speech, Kim stressed the need for North Korea to achieve what he described as “absolute superiority” in drone technology. He also called for measures to accelerate the development and expansion of unmanned aircraft capabilities.

Military AI and Drone Development Become Key Priorities

Kim also urged the country’s scientific community to make progress in artificial intelligence for defence applications. The remarks indicate that North Korea is placing greater emphasis on unmanned systems and AI as part of its broader military modernisation efforts.

The focus on drone technology comes amid changes in modern warfare, particularly the growing use of unmanned systems in international conflicts. Analysts have suggested that North Korean personnel deployed to Russia in support of its war against Ukraine may have gained experience in drone operations and related military technologies.

Weapons Demonstration Includes Missiles and Rocket Launchers

Alongside the exhibition, North Korea conducted a demonstration involving unmanned aircraft, cruise missiles and a 600-millimetre multiple rocket launcher, KCNA reported. The state news agency claimed that the systems successfully hit designated targets, although its performance claims could not be independently verified.

South Korea’s military separately reported detecting approximately 10 short-range ballistic missile launches from the Wonsan area towards the East Sea on October 29. The launches were North Korea’s first ballistic missile firings in 17 days, according to the report.

Rising Tensions Between North and South Korea

The latest military activities come as relations between North and South Korea remain strained. Tensions have increased following landmine explosions near the border last month that injured three South Korean soldiers. Seoul blamed Pyongyang for the incident, while North Korea denied responsibility.

North Korea has also threatened to resume propaganda broadcasts along the border and deploy additional weapons systems in the area. The developments have added to concerns about security on the Korean Peninsula.

Diplomatic engagement between North Korea, South Korea and the United States has remained limited since negotiations between Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump broke down in 2019. Trump has recently expressed interest in restoring dialogue, while Pyongyang has continued its military demonstrations.

International Implications

North Korea’s renewed emphasis on drones and military artificial intelligence reflects its stated intention to modernise its armed forces. The exhibition also comes amid its closer military relationship with Russia and efforts to strengthen ties with China.

The latest developments are likely to remain a focus for regional governments monitoring security conditions in East Asia. For businesses operating internationally, geopolitical tensions can also affect trade routes, investment confidence and supply-chain planning.
