Delhi-NCR Couple Faces Tax Penalties Over Alleged ₹5.3 Crore False Deduction Claims

November 2, 2026

Income tax authorities have investigated an IT professional and his wife in the Delhi-NCR region over alleged fraudulent deduction claims and tax irregularities estimated at ₹5.3 crore over a five-year period. The investigation reportedly uncovered suspected alterations to donation receipts, fabricated financial documents, questionable education loan interest claims and rental income that was allegedly not disclosed in income tax returns.

According to the report, officials examined the couple’s financial declarations after identifying inconsistencies between the deductions claimed and the information available in their tax records.

Donation Claims Triggered the Investigation

The scrutiny reportedly began with the wife’s claim of more than ₹40 lakh in donations to a political party. However, her Form 16 reflected deductions of approximately ₹1.2 lakh.

During verification, investigators allegedly discovered that an actual donation of just ₹50 had been represented as a substantially larger contribution. The receipt was suspected to have been digitally modified, while additional supporting documents were allegedly fabricated.

The husband, who reportedly handled the couple’s income tax filings, was also questioned about the documents submitted in support of the deductions. Investigators alleged that modified receipts and bank statements were provided during the verification process.

Bank Records Revealed Questionable Transactions

Authorities reportedly contacted the relevant bank after noticing discrepancies in the financial documents. Verification of the transactions allegedly showed that loan repayments, credit card payments and transfers between the couple’s own bank accounts had been presented as political contributions.

The investigation further indicated that the disputed deduction was subsequently shifted from political donations under Section 80GGC to charitable contributions under Section 80G, without the original claim being withdrawn.

These provisions cover different categories of eligible contributions and are subject to specific legal conditions. A deduction claim must be supported by genuine transactions and appropriate documentation.

Education Loan Interest Claim Also Came Under Scrutiny

Another significant issue involved an alleged claim of nearly ₹3 crore in education loan interest associated with studies at Yale University.

The couple reportedly submitted an interest certificate to support the deduction. However, officials allegedly found that no member of the family had studied at the institution.

According to the report, the certificate had been prepared using ChatGPT. Investigators treated the document as another suspected fabrication submitted in support of the claimed tax benefit.

The episode highlights an important distinction: technology can help prepare or format documents, but it cannot establish the authenticity of a financial transaction or replace genuine records issued by a lender or educational institution.

Property Ownership and Rental Income Discrepancies

Investigators also examined housing loan declarations and income from property.

According to the report, both spouses had allegedly claimed sole ownership of the same property in their respective tax filings, even though they acknowledged that the property was jointly owned.

The property was reportedly rented out rather than occupied by the owners. Authorities identified rental earnings estimated at between ₹10 lakh and ₹16 lakh during the period under examination, while certain returns allegedly showed no rental income.

Officials also reportedly identified inconsistencies in the bank name and loan amounts mentioned in the submitted documents. A housing loan that had been repaid in 2015 was allegedly used to support interest deduction claims in subsequent financial years.

These discrepancies became part of the broader examination of the couple’s income declarations and supporting records.

What Legal Action Could Follow?

The couple reportedly face penalties and further legal proceedings over the alleged irregularities and suspected forged documents. The final consequences will depend on the findings of the investigation, applicable provisions of tax law and any subsequent proceedings.

The case also draws attention to the importance of maintaining accurate records when claiming deductions for donations, education loan interest and housing loan payments.

Taxpayers should ensure that donation receipts correspond with actual payments, loan interest certificates are issued by genuine lenders, ownership details are correctly disclosed and rental income is properly reported. Professional assistance with income tax compliance and advisory services can help individuals understand documentation requirements and review their tax filings.

A Reminder on Accurate Tax Reporting

The reported investigation illustrates how information declared in income tax returns may be examined against bank records, employer-issued statements, property documents and other supporting evidence.

A deduction should not be claimed solely because a document appears complete or contains the required figures. Its underlying transaction must also be genuine and legally eligible.

For taxpayers, accurate disclosure and reliable documentation remain essential to avoiding disputes, penalties and prolonged scrutiny.
